Conscious Stretching Class (Beginning in July)

Thorough stretching is important before and after any form of exertion, even if it is just getting up and going about our day. In this class we will explore stretches that anyone can do – early in the morning, during breaks in the day, before dinner or at bedtime (or any other time, for that matter). Stretching is especially important before times of stress, whether physical stress (like running, swimming, tennis, etc.) or psychological stress of the kind many of us encounter in the ordinary course of our lives.

This class focuses on the stretching segment of the Conscious Running Class – connecting with the breath, tuning in to sensation and body awareness, followed by a thorough stretching of each individual muscle-group. There will be no running or vigorous walking included in this class. The entire class will be devoted to a gradual warming up of the entire body from the inside out.

We begin with explorations of sensation and breath – the sounds of nature around us, perhaps the cars, the wind, dogs, children, shifting gradually to the sounds we are making, including the sound of our own breath. As we begin to move, there may be other sounds emanating from our bodies – clothes rustling, tendons moving, perhaps tiny (or not so tiny) cracks and pops from joints. We stretch with ease and always with the breath. The stretch invites inhale. Releasing the stretch invites exhale. There is a brief pause before the next stretch and the next breath. We continue to stretch until our entire bodies are awake and invigorated and we are ready to go about a busy day.

Kids and dogs welcome.

Meets Tuesday mornings, 7 am, Duboce Park Children’s Playground, Duboce and Noe Streets, San Francisco.

Class limited to 8 participants. Please call to reserve your place.

$5 per half-hour class or 10 classes for $40.

Conscious Walking Class (Beginning in July)

This class explores the principles of Conscious Running in a less vigorous and structured way. As with Conscious Running, we will begin each class with a few simple breathing exercises, and thorough stretching. This will be followed by the full warm-up walk which is included at the beginning of each Conscious Running class. Then instead of running through the Panhandle, we will explore different gaits, different speeds and different modalities which might contribute to a healthy walking regimen.

Walking gaits to be explored: slow walking, fast walking, foot-crossing, sideways walking, backward walking, skipping, hopping (feathering); short steps, long steps, lunge-walking, backward lunge-walking. When does fast walking become jogging (or trotting)?

Thursday evenings, 6 pm. Meet at the Duboce Park Children’s Playground, Duboce and Noe Streets, San Francisco.

Kids and dogs welcome.

Please call to reserve you place; enrollment is limited to 8 people.

$10 per hour-long class; 4 classes for $35.
